He inherited the red jersey from a crash on a flat road and would not put it on that night. Thirteen racing days later he rode it into Granada with six teammates in formation and the Spanish anthem behind him. Vuelta a Espana 2026 stage 21 ran 112 kilometres from Carrefour Granada to Granada, official type Flat, four punches up the Alhambra, a jury that froze the general classification at 9.8 kilometres to go, and a two-man sprint that finally paid Tobias Halland Johannessen. He won it in 2:54:08. Alessandro Romele was second on the same time. Ramses Debruyne was third. Enric Mas is champion of Spain’s Grand Tour in 73:52:55, 2:15 ahead of Primož Roglič, 2:44 ahead of Felix Gall, the first Spaniard on that step since Alberto Contador in 2014. The last stage of a three-week race is supposed to be a commute. This one still asked a city for a photograph.
Feel what that sentence actually costs. Mas, AS and The Guardian, still in red: I felt some nerves, it was a day with a mix of emotions, all of them positive. I have dreamed of this and fought for it. The Aitana stage is the most special of these 21 days. It is true that was the one where I could get the victory. The team needed a victory like this and now we have it. Johannessen was second on Valdelinares and second yesterday on a climb that had never finished a professional race. Today he beat Romele after they dropped Matthew Brennan in the last kilometre. Wout van Aert is the 13th Belgian points winner. Santiago Buitrago is the fifth Colombian mountains winner. Oscar Onley is the first British white jersey. Decathlon CMA CGM keep the teams sheet. Visma-Lease a Bike won seven stages and none of the red. 142 names started. 142 finished. 3,014.8 kilometres from Monaco to a palace. The 81st Vuelta is a closed account.
He inherited red in a ditch. He took it home in Granada.
Thirteen racing days, 2:15, and the first Spanish anthem at a Vuelta podium since 2014
Mas, stage 8: Tadej crashed, I didn't win the red jersey, so I think to not put it on now is something to show the respect to him. Now, another race starts.
Stage 9, Alto de Aitana: he answered Gall three times, dropped everyone but Onley and became the first Spaniard to win a Vuelta stage in red since Contador at Ancares in 2014. Stage 20: he counted kilometres from the gun on Collado del Alguacil and turned 1:37 into 2:15. Stage 21: the jury froze the clock at 9.8 km to go. The photograph was already paid for.
You can inherit a jersey from a champion's ditch and still have to keep it for thirteen racing days. He did. The number is 2:15. Granada does not get a refund.
Vuelta a Espana 2026 stage 21 was 112 kilometres of a city that had never finished this race
Feel the geometry, because the roadbook will sell you Flat and the last four laps will sell you a punch nobody in this peloton got for free. Official distance 112 kilometres. Official type: Flat. Official start: Carrefour Granada. Official finish: fifth passage of Paseo del Salón. Wikipedia and El Mundo still print 99.4 kilometres. CFP uses the roadbook. Neutralised start 16:20. Expected arrival 19:06. BikeRaceInfo at 17:00 local: 32°C, 89°F, sunny, wind southwest at 13 km/h, two percent chance of rain. Average speed 38.591 km/h. Every stage 20 finisher rolled out. The supermarket start is not a joke. It is the kilometre-zero the organisation printed, and from there the race ran through Armilla, Churriana de la Vega, La Zubia, Gójar, Otura, Alhendín, Las Gabias, Cúllar Vega, Santa Fe and Atarfe before it even reached the first passage of the line.
Five passages of Paseo del Salón. Four visits to Paseo del Generalife, the Alhambra exterior. First passage at kilometre 70.2, 41.8 kilometres to go. Second at 29.4 to go. Third at 19.6 to go, the intermediate sprint. Fourth at 9.8 to go, the freeze. Fifth is the photograph. L’Équipe prints the Alhambra climb at 2.1 kilometres at 6.6 percent. Observador prints ramps to 10. El Mundo, yesterday, printed 7.5 percent over two kilometres. CFP is not going to pick a souvenir gradient. The climb is a city wall with a palace on it, repeated until the legs say no. Fernando Escartín said the winner should be an explosive rider. The organisation designed the finale to avoid a traditional bunch sprint. The teams asked the jury to take the GC clock off the last lap because the circuit was a crash looking for a number. The jury said yes. The puncheurs still had to race it.
Granada had hosted 20 Vuelta finishes. It had never hosted the last one. Madrid was busy with Formula 1, forty-five years after its last Grand Prix, and the Vuelta went looking for a palace. The Alhambra is nine centuries of Mediterranean stone. The men who rode under it had already spent 2,912.6 kilometres getting here. Stage 3 was annulled in hail. Stage 15 was cut for 40-degree air. Tadej Pogačar left in an ambulance’s aftermath on a flat road in Xeraco. Mikel Landa cried on a first-ever wall yesterday. The last stage of a Grand Tour is where the bodies that survived all of that are asked to steer through a city that wants a picture. They steered. Then they attacked.
The jury froze the clock. The road did not freeze the race.
El Mundo printed the request on Saturday. Observador printed the decision on Sunday morning: individual GC times neutralized on the last stretch, 9.8 kilometres from the finish, no bonuses at the line, points still awarded. The Guardian: in agreement with the UCI after riders raised safety concerns. BikeRaceInfo’s organiser paragraph: times taken as the riders pass the finish line for the penultimate time. EFE printed 9.5 kilometres. CFP uses 9.8. A freeze is a political act dressed as safety. It is also the only reason a 2:15 lead on a circuit with 10 percent ramps is a title instead of a rumour. Mas did not need to sprint. He still needed to stay upright for 102.2 kilometres before the jury would let him celebrate. That is not nothing. That is a supermarket-to-palace commute with four Alhambras in a 32-degree city, and a four-time winner still sitting on his wheel until the clock stopped.
Look at the remainder. When the jury took the times, the stage-winning move was already 1:49 up the road. That gap went into the sheet. Harold Tejada finished with the front group and moved from +14:40 to +12:51. He stayed tenth. Guillaume Martin-Guyonnet gained the same 1:49 and stayed eleventh. Mas, Roglič, Gall, Richard Carapaz, Sepp Kuss and Onley were in the group the freeze billed. Their relative gaps did not move. 2:15 stayed 2:15. A parade that still moves almost two minutes for the men who made the break is not a procession. It is a jury decision with a remainder. The remainder went to a Norwegian who had spent this Vuelta finishing second.
A flat stage with Alhambra ramps is still a bike race. The bodies did not want it to be a GC race.
- El Mundo, Saturday: the organisation is studying a request from the teams to neutralize times because of the danger of the Granada circuit.
- Observador: announced before the start. The Vuelta decided to neutralize individual GC times on the last stretch, 9.8 km from the finish. No bonuses at the line. Points still awarded.
- The Guardian: last 9.8 km neutralized in agreement with the UCI after riders raised safety concerns. Official type remained Flat. Official distance remained 112 km.
A freeze is not a gift to everybody. It is a photograph taken early.
- At the fourth passage the stage-winning move was already 1:49 up the road. That gap went into the GC sheet. Tejada, in the front group, moved from +14:40 to +12:51. He stayed tenth.
- Mas, Roglic, Gall, Carapaz, Kuss and Onley were in the group that the freeze billed 1:49. Their relative gaps did not move. 2:15 stayed 2:15. 2:44 stayed 2:44.
- A parade that still moves 1:49 for the men who made the break is not a procession. It is a jury decision with a remainder. The remainder went to Johannessen.
You can freeze a Grand Tour and still have to sprint around a palace. The clock stopped. The photograph did not.
Tronchon lit it. Brennan was the problem. Johannessen was the answer.
The peloton took it easy from the supermarket. Organiser report: special red jerseys, Movistar gradually increasing the pace en route to Granada, Mas set to become the 64th different winner, the 25th Spaniard, twelve years after his idol Contador. Into the last 50 kilometres they entered the city. First passage, 41.8 to go, the road immediately rises to the Alhambra. Movistar still controlled the first climb. That was the last kilometre of the commute. Groupama-FDJ United took the reins into the last three laps. Bastien Tronchon, already a winner on stage 10 into Elche de la Sierra, attacked with 28 kilometres to go. Johannessen and Brennan were the quickest to react. A group of nine. Uno-X closed it back. The factory team that already had Andreas Leknessund’s Valdelinares was not giving this one away to a committee.
Onto the last ascent, Pau Miquel set a brutal pace to propel Pello Bilbao. The Basque, on his final Grand Tour stage before retiring, opened a gap. Axel Laurance countered with 8 kilometres remaining. A group of twelve came back together, Brennan among them. Everybody wanted the British rider off the wheel. Five Vuelta stages in three weeks is not a supporting act. It is a problem a last kilometre has to solve. Ramses Debruyne, Johannessen and Romele found the opening. L’Équipe: a chaotic finale, a two-man sprint, a surprise bouquet. Marca: an electric finish around the Alhambra. The Norwegian who was second yesterday on 8.3 kilometres at 9.8 percent just beat an Italian who has been on every sprint sheet that mattered in this race. Debruyne, 24, third on the queen stage and third again today. Brennan fourth. Tronchon fifth. Bilbao sixth. The last photograph of a career that is ending sat one place off the podium and still in the front group. That is a way to leave. It is not a way to win.
Tronchon goes. The parade is finished.
Organiser report: Groupama take the reins into the last three laps. Bastien Tronchon, already a winner in Elche de la Sierra, attacks. Johannessen and Brennan are first to react. Nine names. Uno-X closes it back.
The jury takes the clock.
Fourth passage of Paseo del Salon. GC times frozen. No bonuses at the finish. Points still pay. The red jersey can celebrate. The puncheurs still have to race.
Bilbao's last Grand Tour stage. Laurance counters.
Pau Miquel sets a brutal pace to launch Pello Bilbao. The Basque opens a gap on the last Alhambra. Axel Laurance counters with 8 km left. Twelve names come back together, Brennan among them.
Three names. Brennan is the problem.
Everyone wants the British rider off the wheel. Debruyne, Johannessen and Romele find the opening. Second yesterday on a mountain that had never finished a professional race. Today he is not settling for second.
2:54:08. The anthem comes back.
Johannessen beats Romele. Debruyne third. Brennan fourth. Mas crosses with Arcas, Aular, Canal, Castrillo, Garcia Pierna and Romeo. First Spanish Vuelta since 2014.
Johannessen is 27. EFE. Second on stage 7, 34 seconds behind Leknessund. Second on stage 20, 47 seconds behind Landa, combativity already his before the line. Franceinfo: 24 top-10s in 2026 and nothing that paid like this. Uno-X’s second stage of the race. First Grand Tour stage of his career. A man who spent three weeks being the last name on the mountain just took the only number a last stage still puts in yellow ink. Romele has been the other photograph all month: second in Córdoba, on the sheet in Lorca and Sevilla, 171 points in green before today. He lost a two-man sprint to a climber. That is what four Alhambras do to a bunch-sprint career. The organisation designed a finale for an explosive rider. It got one.
The last kilometre was a private argument with a palace in the background. Debruyne opened it. Johannessen and Romele went with him because leaving Brennan a lead-out on a 6.6 percent city wall is how you donate a sixth Visma stage. They did not donate it. BikeRaceInfo’s frame is the two of them throwing the bike at the line, Romele on the left, Johannessen on the right, and the Norwegian’s last kick is the one that lands. Europa Press: he made up for the second place from 24 hours earlier. He collected. A 112-kilometre stage that started as a supermarket commute just paid a climber in a two-man sprint because the road went up four times and the sprinters’ factory could not hold the shape. That is the design. That is also the cost. Brennan still finished fourth. Visma still won seven days. The last yellow ink of the 81st Vuelta went to Uno-X.
Mas is first overall in 73:52:55. Roglič is second at 2:15. Gall is third at 2:44. Carapaz is fourth at 6:54. Kuss is fifth at 8:45. The last stage moved 1:49 for the men in the break. It moved nothing among the men who already owned the steps.
Organiser report: second the day before at Collado del Alguacil, Johannessen finally clinched his first Grand Tour stage win ahead of Romele.
- The waitUno-X already had Leknessund's Valdelinares. Johannessen had the combativity jersey yesterday and 14 bonus seconds in the bank. Franceinfo: 24 top-10s in 2026 and nothing that paid like this. A career of almosts just became a line in the palmares.
- The goTronchon at 28 km. Bilbao on the last Alhambra. Laurance at 8 km. Debruyne into the last kilometre with Johannessen and Romele on the wheel. Brennan, five-time stage winner, was the name they were trying to lose. They lost him.
- The sheet2:54:08. Average 38.591 km/h. Romele s.t. Debruyne s.t. Brennan s.t. Tronchon fifth. Bilbao sixth on the last Grand Tour stage of his career. EFE printed 3:07:09 and 35.9 km/h. CFP uses the official 2:54:08.
A second place is a photograph of somebody else. Two of them in one Vuelta is a pattern. Granada broke it.
He inherited red in a ditch. He took it home with six teammates.
Organiser report: Mas crosses the line with his six teammates by his side. Jorge Arcas. Orluis Aular. Carlos Canal. Pablo Castrillo. Raúl García Pierna. Iván Romeo. Special red from the supermarket start. El País: all of them embracing on the bikes. That is not a lead-out. That is a factory team walking a city it has not owned since Nairo Quintana in 2016. Mas is 31. Artà. Second in 2018, 2020 and 2022. Third in 2024. Fifth at the 2020 Tour. L’Équipe calls it redemption. The body is uglier and more useful. A rider who spent a generation being the Spanish almost just became the Spanish champion because the strongest man in the race crashed on stage 8 and because the man who inherited the jersey refused to treat it like a gift.
Read the stage 8 tape again if you need the cost. Mas, lavuelta.es, the night Pogačar went out: Tadej crashed, I didn’t win the red jersey, so I think to not put it on now is something to show the respect to him. Now, another race starts. Tomorrow is one of the hardest stages. The next afternoon he won on Alto de Aitana, answered Gall three times, dropped everyone but Onley and became the first Spaniard to win a Vuelta stage in red since Contador at Ancares. He did not give the jersey back. Roglič took 33 seconds in Jerez and still woke up 1:37 down. Gall took 17 seconds on Alguacil and woke up 29 seconds from second. Mas counted kilometres from the gun on the queen stage and turned 1:37 into 2:15. The freeze kept the number. The six teammates kept the body upright. The anthem did the rest.
Mas, AS / The Guardian: I felt some nerves, it was a day with a mix of emotions, all of them positive. I have dreamed of this and fought for it. The Aitana stage is the most special of these 21 days.
- The inheritancePogacar won Monaco and Andorra and then crashed out of Xeraco. Mas would not wear the jersey that night. He wore it on Aitana and did not take it off. Thirteen racing days. One stage win. 2:15. The ditch did not win this race. The man who refused the photograph did.
- The escortOrganiser report: Mas crosses with six teammates. Arcas, Aular, Canal, Castrillo, Garcia Pierna, Romeo. Special red jerseys from the supermarket start. El Pais: all of them embracing on the bikes. A Spanish factory team that had not won this race in ten years just walked a city in formation.
- The othersRoglic, four-time winner, second by 2:15. Gall, first Grand Tour podium, 29 seconds from second after Alguacil, still third. Carapaz fourth at 6:54. Kuss fifth at 8:45, a former winner who took the rung on the queen stage and kept it.
A generation spent a decade being told this race belonged to Pogacar and Roglic. Spain just put the anthem on a Granada circuit that had never finished a Vuelta.
Tejada is tenth at 12:51. It was 14:40 this morning. The freeze paid him 1:49 and not a place. Martin-Guyonnet eleventh at 20:14. Léo Bisiaux twelfth at 25:03, still the third young rider. Mattias Skjelmose thirteenth at 25:43, the sick man who fell out of the ten on Alguacil and did not climb back. Buitrago seventeenth at 50:56 and in polka. Johannessen twenty-sixth at 1:26:03 with 14 bonus seconds and a stage win. Landa thirtieth at 1:36:39, yesterday’s tears already a line in the archive. 142 names. Jordi Meeus 141st. Mathias Sunekær Norsgaard last at 6:15:51 on the GC. A Grand Tour is a census of who is still standing. This one counted 142.
Van Aert, lavuelta.es: After winning the green jersey in the Tour in 2022, this was also something that I really wanted to win one day. After the near miss two years ago and the big injury I had afterwards, it makes it more special to be here, to come completely to the end, and to wear this beautiful jersey.
- GreenOfficial 326. Brennan 239 before today's 18 for fourth, still a locked door. Van Aert is the 13th Belgian points winner. He did not have the legs on the first Alhambra and said so. The jersey was already paid for. The injury from 2024 is why the last kilometre still mattered to him.
- The sprinterFive Vuelta stages at his age is not a supporting act. It is a census. The last kilometre in Granada was built to lose him. Debruyne, Johannessen and Romele did. Fourth on a circuit that was supposed to be his if the race stayed together. It did not.
- FifthKuss started the queen stage 11th and finished it fifth. He is still fifth tonight at 8:45. A former Vuelta winner who spent three weeks in the second group took the only rung the freeze could not take back.
You can lose the red jersey and still own the week. Seven yellow days. One green jersey. Fifth overall. That is a factory that got paid.
Green, polka, white: the other photographs
Van Aert did not have the legs. He said so. Official interview: already on the first climb I could already feel that it hurt a bit too much. The fatigue is definitely there after three weeks, and today I was not strong enough to be up there. In a way, yes, this is finished business after crashing out with the green jersey in 2024. After winning the green jersey in the Tour in 2022, this was also something that I really wanted to win one day. After the near miss two years ago and the big injury I had afterwards, it was quite a disappointment. It makes it more special to be here, to come completely to the end, and to wear this beautiful jersey. 326 points. Brennan 239. Romele 171. The 13th Belgian points winner. Two stages of his own, 13 and 15. A green jersey who spent the queen stage in the break hoovering mountains points he could not take home. He still took this one home. The injury is why the last kilometre of a locked classification still had weight.
Buitrago, same mixed zone: I am proud to take this jersey home. I suffered quite a bit, suffered a lot really, but I am going home with more positives from the daily battles. I’ll definitely come back. 78 points. Van Aert 62. Fifth Colombian mountains winner. Third at Calar Alto. Second at La Pandera. Second at Peñas Blancas. Twelfth today. He scored nothing yesterday on the only new summit of the race and still won the count by 16. A mountains jersey can lose every photograph that pays in yellow ink and still be a jersey. He has one. Onley, first British winner of the young-rider standings, sixth overall at 9:28, 1:10 on Jakob Omrzel: I think it is fair to say this has been not a great season for me, so just to finish the Vuelta is already a success. Sick in week one. Crashes he says were not in his control. The dinner table is what he wants remembered. White is a locked door with a 1:10 chain. He kept it. The team around him is why.
Buitrago, lavuelta.es: I am proud to take this jersey home. I suffered quite a bit, suffered a lot really, but I am going home with more positives. Onley: I think it is fair to say this has been not a great season for me, so just to finish the Vuelta is already a success.
- PolkaFifth Colombian mountains winner. Third at Calar Alto. Second at La Pandera. Second at Penas Blancas. Twelfth today. He scored nothing on the queen stage and still took the jersey home by 16. The summits that pay in yellow ink went to other men. The count went to him.
- WhiteOnley, sixth overall at 9:28. Sick in week one. Crashes he says were not in his control. First British winner of the young-rider standings. The team around the dinner table is what he wants remembered. Sixth in a Grand Tour after a bad season is not a footnote. It is a winter of confidence.
- The race3,014.8 km. Average 40.806 km/h. 142 finishers. Stage 3 annulled in hail. Stage 15 cut for heat. Pogacar gone on stage 8. Landa's last chance on a first-ever wall. Mas in red from a ditch to a palace. That is the 81st Vuelta. It is now a closed account.
A Grand Tour is four jerseys and a body count. Spain took the one that plays the anthem. The other three still had to be ridden to the line.
What twelve years cost
Spain had not won this race since Contador in 2014. Movistar had not won it since Quintana in 2016. Mas had four Vuelta podiums and zero titles. Pogačar came to win it and left on stage 8. Roglič came for a fifth and leaves with second by 2:15. Gall leaves with a first Grand Tour podium and 29 seconds of what second would have cost if he had gone earlier on Alguacil. Carapaz leaves fourth. Kuss leaves fifth. Brennan leaves with five stages. Van Aert leaves in green. Buitrago leaves in polka. Onley leaves in white. Johannessen leaves with the last photograph. Landa leaves with a queen stage after two wrecked years. Bilbao leaves the sport from the front group of a Granada circuit. The 81st Vuelta started in Monaco and finished under the Alhambra. 3,014.8 kilometres. 40.806 km/h. One annulled stage. One heat-cut stage. One champion who would not wear the jersey the night he got it.
Mas, still talking about the next objectives because that is what athletes do when a dream lands and the calendar does not stop: we have no time to enjoy our victories. Read that twice. A 31-year-old who spent a decade being told he was the next Spanish Grand Tour winner just became the current one, and the sentence he reaches for is the next start list. Aitana is the day he wants. Granada is the day the anthem played. The ditch on stage 8 is the day the race became his to lose. He did not lose it. Roglič could not take it. Gall could not take it. The circuit could not take it. The freeze made the last 9.8 kilometres a procession for the jersey and a knife fight for the stage. Johannessen won the fight. Mas won the three weeks. What is a Grand Tour worth when you inherit it from a champion’s crash, refuse the photograph, and still have to keep the jersey upright for thirteen racing days through hail, heat, a first-ever wall and a city that wanted a picture?
