Hands Down: Tronchon Wins the Sprint Visma Could Not Finish

  • 1km 20 — Seven riders finally stick: Paleni, Gogl, Dversnes, Sutterlin, Weiss, Fernandez and Cobo. Visma and Cofidis take the bunch.
  • 2km 47.6 — Paleni leads over Puerto del Peralejo. The gap is already being managed, not hunted.
  • 3km 86.3 — Weiss takes Puerto de Ayna. The break still has a couple of minutes and no permission to dream.
  • 4km 125 — Weiss takes the Hellin intermediate sprint: 20 points and six bonus seconds. Van Aert does not contest it.
  • 5km 153 — Cobo, Gogl, Paleni and Dversnes drop the other three on the approach to Socovos. About 1:20 remains.
  • 6km 163 — Dversnes leads over Socovos with about 30 seconds. Near the top, a quartet including Nys and Brennan briefly goes clear and is brought back.
  • 7km 183.7 — Fedorov and Azparren jump under the flamme rouge. Brennan's lead-out is already dead. The bunch has to sprint around a two-man raid.
  • 8km 184.7 — The pair is caught about 150 metres out. Tronchon wins the photo finish and does not raise his hands.

Bastien Tronchon launched, hit the line, and kept his hands on the bars. He thought somebody might still be in front. The camera said nobody was. That is how a 24-year-old takes the biggest win of his life: not with a salute, with a doubt.

Vuelta a Espana 2026 stage 10 was supposed to be the first clean sprint after the rest day. Visma and Cofidis spent 184.7 kilometres from Alcaraz to Elche de la Sierra making sure of it. Then Yevgeniy Fedorov and Xabier Mikel Azparren jumped under the flamme rouge, Matthew Brennan’s lead-out died, and Tronchon came around the wreckage to beat Magnus Cort, Thibau Nys and Wout van Aert in a photo finish. Time: 4:07:41. Margin: a tyre, and a man who did not dare to celebrate it.

Enric Mas finished 36th in the same group and kept red by 1:18. The general classification did not move. The sprint did. A team that had already won two stages this Vuelta arrived at the last kilometre with a plan and left it with fourth, 90th and a green jersey that still has no stage attached.

He did not put his hands in the air.

Vuelta a Espana 2026 stage 10 was a trap dressed as a transition

The roadbook sold a day the sprinters could survive and the break could smell. Three category-3 climbs, none of them steep, all of them relentless: Puerto del Peralejo, 5.2 kilometres at 4.3 percent; Puerto de Aýna, 7.7 kilometres at 4 percent; Puerto de Socovos, 9.8 kilometres at 3.5 percent, summit 21.5 kilometres from a rising finish into a town that had never hosted a men’s Vuelta stage. Official elevation: 2,991 metres. Elche de la Sierra had seen the women’s race in 2023. On Tuesday it saw what happens when a peloton treats 3.5 percent as nothing and then has to sprint uphill with no train.

This was the first racing day of the open Vuelta. Tadej Pogačar had been in a Barcelona operating theatre on Monday. Mas had earned red on Aitana on Sunday. The GC men wanted a free ride. Van Aert said at the start that Visma wanted the stage. Cofidis, one win already this week through Bryan Coquard, had the same idea. That is how you get a seven-man break that is allowed to exist and never allowed to believe.

5.2

Peralejo

5.2 km at 4.3 percent, km 47.6. Paleni takes the three points. The break is already on a leash.

7.7

Ayna

7.7 km at 4 percent, km 86.3. Weiss scores. The peloton is still spending Visma and Cofidis, not GC teams.

9.8

Socovos

9.8 km at 3.5 percent, summit 21.5 km from the line. Long enough to wreck a lead-out. Too shallow to make a GC selection.

The climbs were not hard enough to drop Van Aert. They were hard enough to scramble the men who were supposed to deliver him.

Climb lengths and averages from the official roadbook and EFE/LNE stage sheet: Peralejo 5.2 km at 4.3%, Ayna 7.7 km at 4%, Socovos 9.8 km at 3.5%. Total elevation 2,991 m over 184.7 km.

Seven riders got a lease. Visma kept the keys.

The move that stuck was Enzo Paleni, Michael Gogl, Fredrik Dversnes, Jasha Sütterlin, Fabian Weiss, Sinuhé Fernández and Iván Cobo. Paleni, Gogl, Dversnes, a Jayco engine, a Tudor puncheur, a Burgos rider who had already spent a solo day on stage 8, and Kern Pharma. Enough quality to make the bunch work. Not enough to scare a team that wanted a photograph in Albacete.

Paleni led over Peralejo. Weiss led over Aýna. The gap sat between two and three minutes because that is the range in which a sprinters’ team can look busy without ever losing the argument. Cofidis hurt them on Aýna; Sergio Samitier dragged the bunch to 1:22 at one checkpoint. The escape was not a contest. It was a budget.

Seven men got three minutes. The last two got 900 metres. Neither got the line.CFP

Weiss used the budget. At Hellín, kilometre 125, he took the intermediate sprint: 20 points and six bonus seconds. Van Aert did not leave the bunch to chase crumbs. He was saving the sprint he thought he owned. The mountains classification stayed where Sunday left it, because category-3 pay is three points, two, and one. Buitrago could sit in the gruppetto of the mind and still wake up in polka dots.

Seven men were allowed to exist - Visma and Cofidis decided how longCFP
The lease

A break on a clock

  • Paleni, Gogl, Dversnes, Sutterlin, Weiss, Fernandez and Cobo.
  • Maximum around three minutes. Never a Grand Tour winning margin.
  • Weiss cashes Hellin: 20 points and six bonus seconds. Paleni, Weiss and Dversnes take the mountains crumbs.
The catch

Four, then two, then none

  • Cobo, Gogl, Paleni and Dversnes drop the rest before Socovos.
  • Dversnes leads over the top at 30 seconds. Ten kilometres later only Gogl and Dversnes are left, and then nobody.
  • The original break finishes minutes down. Paleni, the first man over Peralejo, is 114th at 6:26.

A break that is allowed to live is also allowed to die. That was the point of the day until the last kilometre refused the script.

Break composition from La Vuelta's live feed and VAVEL. Summit orders from Marca and Siol. Final times from the official stage ranking: Dversnes +2:54, Paleni/Gogl/Weiss +6:26, Cobo +7:29, Fernandez and Sutterlin +10:32.

Socovos did not drop the fast men. It dropped the plan.

Feel the last climb. Nine-point-eight kilometres at 3.5 percent is a sentence you can say without raising your voice. After 160 kilometres and nearly 3,000 metres of rolling road it is a different sentence. Cobo, Gogl, Paleni and Dversnes dropped the other three on the approach. The Athletic recorded a dangerous quartet near the top that included Nys and Brennan. It came back. Dversnes led over the summit with about 30 seconds. The break had become a fuse.

Ten kilometres later Gogl and Dversnes were the only two still in front, and their lead was a few seconds. The Guardian and AFP put the catch there. Visma still had the bunch. Brennan, already a double stage winner at this Vuelta, came to the front to deliver Van Aert. That is the last moment the day still looked like the meeting they had on the bus.

The road after Socovos is why this finish was never a boulevard sprint. After the descent there is another rise, about 1.7 kilometres at 5.5 percent, then 4.5 kilometres of false flat into town. L’Équipe called the finale a small-committee uphill drag. AP put Tronchon’s winning surge in the last 20 metres of it. That geometry selects a different animal than Xeraco did on Saturday: not the purest sprinter left in Spain, the man who can still open a gear when the road is still climbing and the lead-out has already panicked.

The flamme rouge did not belong to the team that had paid for it

Fedorov went. Azparren went with him. One kilometre left, Kazakhstan’s national champion and a Pinarello-Q36.5 rider who had already tried this trick on the Barx descent on Saturday. Europa Press put the catch at 150 metres. Reuters said just before the line. Either way the bunch had to sprint around two men who were not supposed to be there, on a rising road, with the lead-out already in pieces.

Brennan finished 90th, 1:20 down. Christophe Laporte, the other Visma closer, finished 127th at 7:29. Van Aert still produced fourth. That is a champion’s consolation and a team’s indictment. El País called it a lapse: Brennan launched instead of finishing, and Van Aert did not have the legs in the last straight. The Independent said the train unravelled after the raid. The result sheet does not pick a narrator. It just lists the man who was not in the meeting at all.

They policed 184.7 kilometres for a bunch sprint, then arrived at the flamme rouge with no train and a green jersey that had to invent a finish.

Tronchon was. Guillaume Martin-Guyonnet, Groupama’s GC rider, finished 22nd on the same time after doing the thing Van Aert asked of his own teammates and did not get: go full gas until you die. Tronchon told BBC he said exactly that. Then he launched, and he did not throw the arms, because the two raiders had scrambled his sightlines and the line arrived before certainty did.

He did not raise his hands - the photograph that had to wait for the cameraCFP
NO

Tronchon launched, hit the line, and kept his hands on the bars because he thought somebody might still be in front.

AP put the winning surge in the last 20 metres of an uphill drag. Reuters called it a photo finish. The Guardian watched him put a hand to his helmet, then sob when the teammates arrived. First Grand Tour stage. Third career win. Groupama-FDJ United's first Grand Tour stage in two years.

If you are sure you have won a Vuelta stage, you throw the arms. He was not sure. That is how close the biggest win of his life was.

Quotes from BBC, Reuters and the official organisation microphone. Career wins: Tour of Burgos 2022, Tro-Bro Leon 2025, Vuelta stage 10 2026 (TV5Monde/AFP). WorldTour/Grand Tour firsts from The Athletic and Reuters.

The man who won it did not believe it. The men who lost it will have to.

Listen to him. BBC: “I launched my sprint and I just finished it on the line, but I wasn’t sure if there was some guys in front or not, so I did not put my hands in the air.” Then: “That’s crazy, I can’t believe it. The last two days were really hard for me and today I was good.” Reuters has the career version: preparation this year was not very good, he did not expect this, trust the process. AS has the contract version: two years left, a Grand Tour win is what every team here is hunting, he does not think it changes his trajectory overnight. He will remember the day. He already knows the rest of the year had not been good. He sprints better in the heat. Albacete gave him heat, chaos, and a rising 20 metres AP says he owned.

The Guardian watched him put a hand to the helmet, then cry when the teammates got there. First Grand Tour stage. Third professional win, after a Tour of Burgos stage in 2022 and Tro-Bro Léon last year in Brittany. The Athletic: first WorldTour win, Groupama-FDJ United’s first Grand Tour stage in two years. He had already shown the shape of this finish: seventh on stage 8 in Xeraco, in the Coquard sprint, on a day the race was still thinking about an ambulance. L’Équipe noted that one. Groupama also had Paleni in the morning break, first over Peralejo, 114th at the line, 6:26 down. One teammate spent the day on a leash. Another spent it waiting for the leash to snap. Coquard had ended a 13-year wait on Saturday. France has now taken two of the three stages since Pogačar left. Neither of those winners started the morning as the favourite. That is the Vuelta without a red train: the photograph keeps going to the man who is still paying attention when the favourite’s plan cracks.

Cort was second. He is riding through the last season of a career he has already announced will end, and he went down in the same stage-8 crash that took Pogačar. A photo finish in Elche de la Sierra is a hard way to be told the legs are still there and the timing is not. This is the rider who has made a living arriving in the last 200 metres of races other men designed. Today somebody else designed it later than he did. Nys was third, the punchiest of the Lidl-Trek options, close enough to put Van Aert off the podium and far enough to leave the Belgian without a stage. Romele was fifth, the birthday raider from Aitana now cashing a bunch sprint instead of a mountain raid. Azparren was sixth after almost stealing the whole thing. Fedorov, who started the raid, was 12th. Coquard was 13th. Finn Fisher-Black was seventh, Orluis Aular eighth for the leader’s team, Jordan Labrosse ninth, Hugo Hofstetter tenth. The men who were supposed to own this finish are now a list of near-misses under a Frenchman who did not even throw the arms.

The general classification took the day off. The points classification did not.

Mas, Roglič, Gall, Onley, Carapaz, Skjelmose, Kuss, Tejada, Mühlberger, Omrzel: same order, same gaps. Mas 32:41:44. Roglič at 1:18. Gall at 1:39. Onley at 2:20. Carapaz at 3:26. The 2023 winner Kuss is seventh at 4:09 and was 47th on the stage, in the same time, which is the whole point of a transition day if you are trying to reach Calar Alto with a body. Richard Carapaz was 19th. Oscar Onley was 26th. The white jersey is still a GC jersey.

Netcompany INEOS lost Ben Turner, who abandoned during the stage. That is a lead-out body gone before tomorrow’s theoretically flatter argument from Cartagena to Lorca. Mas, Europa Press noted, looked light on teammates in the last kilometres. He still finished on the winner’s time. A 1:18 lead does not need heroics on a 3.5 percent climb. It needs the leader upright, in the wheels, and not inventing a race that starts on Wednesday.

Fourth still paid. First would have ended the argument. - the points race after a messy sprintCFP

  • Van AertStarted the day on 124. Fourth adds to the lead he inherited when Pogacar abandoned. He still does not have a stage.

  • The restPedersen 58, Hayter 57. Hayter finished 160th at 12:18. The sprinters' jersey is being decided by men who can survive Socovos.

Green is no longer a bunch-sprint census. It is a survival ranking with a photo-finish attached.

Points totals after stage 10 from Ciclismo Internacional, cross-checked against the stage-9 baseline (Van Aert 124, Romele 59, Brennan 67, Pedersen 58, Hayter 57) and the official finish order. Mountains remain Buitrago 29, Mas 24, Leknessund 19.

Van Aert remains in green on 149 points. Romele’s fifth place lifts him from 59 to 76 and past Brennan, who scored nothing from 90th and sits on 67. Pedersen is 58. Ethan Hayter is 57 after finishing 160th at 12:18. The mountains jersey did not move: Santiago Buitrago 29, Mas 24, Andreas Leknessund 19, Van Aert 16. Onley still leads the young riders by 5:45 over Jakob Omrzel. Decathlon CMA CGM still lead the teams. The side races did what a hilly sprint is supposed to do. Only the stage refused.

While they sprinted in Albacete, the man who used to own this race was already plated

UAE’s medical director, Dr Adrian Rotunno, said on Monday that Pogačar underwent successful surgery on the left clavicle after receiving clearance to proceed. The procedure went well. He will stay in hospital a few days for post-operative monitoring, then travel home to begin rehabilitation under the team’s medical staff. The diagnosis from Saturday has not been walked back: concussion, displaced left clavicle, stable C7 fracture, abrasions. No return date. No Worlds announcement. Montreal is 27 September. CFP is not a doctor and is not going to write him into a road race from a recovery ward.

  • Mas 36th on the same 4:07:41 as the winner. Roglic 35th. Gall 39th. Onley 26th. Kuss 47th.
  • Ben Turner (Netcompany INEOS) abandons. Stage 11 is Cartagena to Lorca, 153.8 km, with Morron de Totana before another sprint argument.
  • Then Calar Alto. Then La Pandera. Then the Jerez time trial. The transition day is over.
Barcelona

Pogacar's clavicle is plated

  • UAE: successful left-clavicle surgery Monday afternoon after concussion clearance. A few days in hospital, then home for rehab.
  • Diagnosis unchanged: concussion, displaced left clavicle, stable C7, abrasions. No return date.
  • Worlds in Montreal on 27 September remain unannounced. CFP is not going to invent one.

The Vuelta can freeze a classification for a day. It cannot freeze a collarbone, and it will not freeze Calar Alto.

Stage places from the official ranking. Turner abandon from AS live coverage. Stage 11 distance 153.8 km from BBC, RTVE and AFP. Surgery statement from UAE medical director Dr Adrian Rotunno, 31 August 2026.

That bulletin is the other half of the rest-day hangover. The peloton raced 184.7 kilometres as if the favourite’s absence were already old news. In Barcelona it is two days old and made of plates. The Vuelta’s job is to keep putting a finish line in front of whoever can still stand on the pedals. Tronchon’s job, this morning, was to survive three third-category climbs and see whether a chaotic sprint had a door in it. He found one with 20 metres left and still did not trust it.

Tomorrow is another sprint argument. Then the mountains stop pretending.

Stage 11 runs Cartagena to Lorca, 153.8 kilometres, mostly flat, with the category-3 Morron de Totana before the end. BBC, RTVE and AFP all call it a sprinters’ day with one climb that can spoil the script. Van Aert still needs a stage. Brennan still needs a lead-out that survives the last kilometre. Cort still has a finish in him. Nys now knows he can make the podium from a mess. Tronchon now knows he can win one. That is a different peloton than the one that left Alcaraz.

Then the race stops being kind. Stage 12 is Vera to Calar Alto, 166.6 kilometres into an observatory that does not care who won a photo finish in Albacete. Stage 14 is Jaén to Sierra de la Pandera. Stage 18 is the 32.1-kilometre time trial from El Puerto de Santa María to Jerez de la Frontera, the one Roglič has been pointing at since Mas took 18 extra seconds on Aitana. Between those appointments sit Loja, Córdoba, and another rest day. A 1:18 lead is leverage on a mountain. It is a target on a time-trial bike. Gall still has to prove that Decathlon’s Aitana labour was not a donation. Onley is 41 seconds from the podium and already in white. Kuss needs a raid, not another quiet 47th.

A transition day is a gift you only recognise after you have wasted it. Visma spent theirs on a sprint they did not finish. Mas spent his sitting 36th and keeping 1:18. Both of those are choices. Only one of them still owns the jersey, and the next mountain will not ask who won Elche de la Sierra. It will ask who still has a body after 2,991 metres of road that never looked hard enough to matter.

What is a Grand Tour stage worth when the winner will not raise his hands? Enough to change a 24-year-old’s year. Enough to make a two-time stage-winning team look at 90th and ask what the first 183 kilometres were for. Not enough to move Mas. Not enough to put Pogačar back on a bike. Vuelta a Espana 2026 stage 10 gave the open race its first chaotic photograph and left the hierarchy exactly where Aitana put it. The next one will not be that polite.
