He had two years of s**t and a last chance on an 8.3-kilometre wall that had never finished a professional race. He spent both. Vuelta a Espana 2026 stage 20 ran 186.8 kilometres from La Calahorra to Collado del Alguacil, official type Mountain, five categorised climbs, a first-ever hors-categorie summit at 1,884 metres, and a photograph that went to a 36-year-old Basque who cried when he got there. Mikel Landa won it in 4:58:01. Tobias Halland Johannessen was second by 47 seconds. Ramses Debruyne was third by 1:27. Enric Mas finished 14th, 6:54 down on a break that never threatened the jersey, and put 2:15 on Primož Roglič with one flat day left in Granada. The queen stage was supposed to reopen the Vuelta. It closed it.
Feel what that sentence actually costs. Landa, La Vanguardia, voice breaking: I am very happy. I had been looking for this for a long time. It has been a hard season for me and today was the last opportunity. I have had two years of s**t. I thought of my children, and that I could not go home surrendering. EFE: second Vuelta stage after Andorra to Encamp in 2015. La Vanguardia: he had not raised his arms in a Grand Tour since the 2017 Giro. In a few months he rides for Euskaltel. Mas, same mixed zone: for the first time in my life I feel like this. With the legs I had I have seen myself as the winner from the start of the stage. I have been counting down the kilometres. A Mallorcan with three Vuelta second places just turned 1:37 into 2:15 on a mountain that was supposed to be Roglič’s last argument. Eddie Dunbar, who won yesterday, did not finish today. Matthew Riccitello and Chris Hamilton crashed out early. The queen stage takes what it wants. Granada is 112 kilometres and official type Flat. The race is finished unless the road invents a crash.
Two years of s**t. A last chance. He would not go home surrendering.
Landa soloed Collado del Alguacil and won the queen stage by 47 seconds
Landa, La Vanguardia, voice breaking: I am very happy. I had been looking for this for a long time. It has been a hard season for me and today was the last opportunity. I have had two years of shit. I thought of my children, and that I could not go home surrendering.
EFE: second Vuelta stage after Andorra to Encamp in 2015. La Vanguardia: he had not raised his arms in a Grand Tour since the 2017 Giro. Eleven years since the last Spanish summit. In a few months he will ride for Euskaltel. Cadena SER: he could not hold the tears at 36. A career that spent a decade being the next thing just became the thing that happened.
A last chance is not a narrative until it puts a number on a summit. 4:58:01 is the number. The children are why he did not sit up.
Vuelta a Espana 2026 stage 20 was 186.8 kilometres to a summit that did not exist on the sheet
Feel the geometry, because the roadbook will sell you a queen stage and the last 8.3 kilometres will sell you a bill nobody in the professional peloton had ever paid. Official distance 186.8 kilometres. Official type: Mountain. Official finish: Collado del Alguacil, first-ever professional summit, 1,884 metres, 8.3 kilometres at 9.8 percent, 816 metres of climbing, hors categorie. Spanish desks print ramps of 22 percent. ABC prints the worst of it at the end. BikeRaceInfo still carries the original organiser paragraph about a double Hazallanas; the race did not. Landslides in February wrecked that road. The organisation swapped in Puerto de El Duque, 7.4 kilometres at 8.3 percent, and kept the distance and the threat. CFP is not going to pretend the souvenir climb happened. The riders climbed El Duque. Then they climbed a wall with no history.
Five categorised climbs sit between the altiplano and the Sierra Nevada. Puerto de Los Blancares, kilometre 50.7: 7.7 kilometres at 3.7 percent, 283 metres, category three, summit 1,298 metres. Puerto de El Purche twice: 8.2 kilometres at 8.1 percent, 663 metres, category one, summit 1,483 metres, kilometre 94.3 and kilometre 125.5. Puerto de El Duque, kilometre 155.4: 7.4 kilometres at 8.3 percent, 615 metres, category one. Then the new one. ProCyclingStats prints 4,849 metres of elevation and a profile score of 521. The Spanish desks print more than 5,000. Cyclingflash printed 5,120 in January. CFP is not going to pick a souvenir total. The mountain is the mountain. BikeRaceInfo: 28 C at Güejar Sierra at 14:35, sunny, wind northwest at 11 km/h, no rain. Average speed 37.609 km/h. Neutralised start 12:30. Expected arrival 17:16. The bodies that rolled out of La Calahorra had already spent 2,725.8 kilometres getting here. They still had to climb the only new summit of the race on the penultimate afternoon.
La Calahorra had never started a Vuelta stage. Collado del Alguacil had never finished one. The organisation saved both firsts for the day that was supposed to decide the general classification. Güejar Sierra already had a Vuelta memory: Chris Horner won at Hazallanas in 2013 and took the race. That road is closed. This one is 8.3 kilometres at 9.8 percent with no photograph in the archive. A first-ever finish is a rumour until somebody puts a time on it. Landa put 4:58:01. Mas put 2:15. The archive starts there.
The crash came early. The break went long. Van Aert went collecting.
BikeRaceInfo does not dress it up. Early in the stage Matthew Riccitello (Decathlon CMA CGM) and Chris Hamilton (Picnic-PostNL) crashed and had to abandon. PCS adds Eddie Dunbar to the DNF column. Yesterday’s winner, 210.8 kilometres in the legs, one effort spent on Buitrago’s shadow, did not make the queen stage. A Grand Tour that already cut Córdoba for 40-degree air just lost three more names on a 28-degree Saturday because the bodies do not reset when the roadbook prints Mountain. 142 names finished. Jordi Meeus rolled in last at 53:46. The men who wanted the stage spent the first 90 kilometres making a break. The men who wanted the jersey spent the last 90 making sure nobody took it.
Infobae, from the EFE wire: 14 riders in front through Blancares. Pau Miquel took the category-three sprint. Wout van Aert took two points. Andreas Leknessund took one. Then El Purche, first passage, kilometre 94.3. Van Aert 10 mountains points. Miquel 6. Leknessund 4. Oscar Chamberlain 2. Magnus Cort 1. BikeRaceInfo’s frame from the foot of that climb: a break with van Aert almost 11 minutes up the road. That is not a leash. That is a peloton that has already agreed the photograph can leave. Van Aert is in green. He is also in the break of the queen stage, hoovering KOM points a mountains jersey cannot afford to give away and 20 more points at Güejar Sierra, kilometre 144, because a closed account still takes the rent when the road offers it. He finished 30th at 16:36. Green is 326. Matthew Brennan is 239. The points classification is a locked door riding a mountain stage.
The second Purche, kilometre 125.5, is where the day splits into the race you came for and the race Landa came for. Van Aert again: 10 more KOM points. Miquel 6. Ivo Oliveira 4. Leknessund 2. Andreas Kron 1. That is 22 mountains points for a green jersey on a day Buitrago scored none. Polka was 78-40 this morning. It is 78-62 tonight. Sixteen points is still a jersey if the Colombian finishes Granada. It is no longer a census. Van Aert spent the queen stage doing the only job a locked green jersey has left: making the other locked jersey sweat. Buitrago finished 36th at 17:05. Third at Calar Alto. Second at La Pandera. Second at Peñas Blancas. Nothing today. The mountains jersey can win a count and still lose every summit that pays in yellow ink. He still has the count.
The Ecuadorian still thought the podium was a fight.
- Infobae / EFE: Carapaz attacked on El Purche and kept attacking. Decathlon had to burn Scotson and Bisiaux in seconds. Gall, defending third, had to close it himself.
- La Vanguardia: Gall smothered the move a metre before the summit. Then, with 90 kilometres still to race, the leaders were already alone. Mas, Roglic, Gall, Carapaz. Face to face.
- A fourth-place rider 5:17 down who refuses to wait for the last climb is not a gift. He is a problem the red jersey has to mark with legs that still have Alguacil in them.
He never asked the car to pull his own men back.
- La Vanguardia: Mas never asked the team car to sit on the Movistar riders already up the road. He did not see another teammate until they caught Garcia Pierna. Then Romeo. Then Castrillo on the last climb.
- Mas, La Vanguardia: I have won because of everything the team has done for me. More than 40 kilometres isolated. He wanted a bottle and a Lotto soigneur did not hand one over. That was the hard moment. He barely noticed another.
- Control is not conservative when you are the man everyone has to drop. The four-up was the test. He treated it like a commute he had already paid for.
Ninety kilometres of four men and no makeup is what a Grand Tour looks like when the domestiques are gone. Mas did not flinch. Roglic still had to.
Carapaz lit the first Purche. Then there were four names and no makeup.
Richard Carapaz is fourth overall and has spent this Vuelta treating that as a temporary condition. Infobae: he attacked on El Purche and kept attacking. Decathlon had to burn Callum Scotson and Léo Bisiaux in seconds to keep Felix Gall on the step. Gall, defending third, had to close it himself. La Vanguardia: Gall smothered the move a metre before the summit. Then, with 90 kilometres still to race, the leaders were already alone. Mas, Roglič, Gall, Carapaz. Face to face. No domestiques. No makeup. A Grand Tour reduced to four men on the first of the hard climbs is not a procession. It is the test the roadbook promised, delivered 90 kilometres early, with El Duque and Alguacil still unclimbed.
Mas never asked the team car to sit on the Movistar riders already up the road. La Vanguardia: he did not see another teammate until they caught Raúl García Pierna. Then Iván Romeo. Then Pablo Castrillo on the last climb. More than 40 kilometres isolated. He wanted a bottle and a Lotto soigneur did not hand one over. That was the hard moment. He barely noticed another. Mas, La Vanguardia: I have won because of everything the team has done for me. Read that twice. A red jersey that refuses to pull his own break back is a red jersey that trusts the legs more than the radio. Control is not conservative when you are the man everyone has to drop. The four-up was the argument. He treated it like a commute he had already paid for.
Sepp Kuss wanted a piece of it too. Infobae: the American forced Mas and Roglič to stay awake even while they were already distanced from the original bunch. Kuss started the day 11th at 11:04, a Visma rider who tried to go with Carapaz on Peñas Blancas and paid 30 seconds for the commute. He finished eighth on the stage, same time as Jørgen Nordhagen, 4:35 down on Landa, and jumped six places to fifth overall at 8:45. That is not a jersey raid. It is a census correction. A former Vuelta winner who has spent three weeks in the second group just put his name back on the only sheet that still prints into October. The photograph went to Landa. The rung went to Kuss.
He went alone on the second Purche. The last chance had a face.
La Vanguardia puts Landa on the second Purche by himself, catching the four Uno-X riders pulling at the front. Johannessen, Leknessund, Kron, Simon Dalby: a Norwegian factory team that has spent this Vuelta putting men in every break that mattered. Debruyne joined. The photograph stopped being a committee. Güejar Sierra, kilometre 144, still belonged to van Aert for 20 points, Leknessund 17, Dalby 15, Kron 13, Johannessen 10. Then El Duque, kilometre 155.4, the replacement climb, 7.4 kilometres at 8.3 percent, ramps the Spanish desks print at 20. Official KOM: Landa 10 points and 6 bonus seconds. Debruyne 6 and 4. Johannessen 4 and 2. Miquel 2. Jarno Widar 1. The queen stage now has three names and a wall with no history.
Marca called it the old rockers who do not die. That is a headline. The body is uglier and more useful. Landa has spent a career being the man who almost did it: the Giro, the Tour, the Free Landa years, the attacks that looked like the start of a legend and finished as a photograph of somebody else’s jersey. Cadena SER: he arrived at this Vuelta saying it was one of the worst years of his career. La Vanguardia: two years of s**t, a last opportunity, his children, and a refusal to go home surrendering. EFE: the last Vuelta stage win was 2015. The last Grand Tour win was the 2017 Giro. Eleven years is not a drought you market. It is a career window closing in public, on a climb the organisation invented because the famous one fell down a hillside in February. He did not need to win the Vuelta. He did not need a podium. He needed one mountain that still owed him a number. He took it.
Johannessen was the last man on that mountain with him. Combativity already his before the line, 8 seconds at the finish, 2 on El Duque, a Norwegian who has been in the war since the first hour. Debruyne, 24, the other name, 18 bonus seconds across two climbs, third on a queen stage for Alpecin-Premier Tech on a day the factory teams were supposed to own. Pau Miquel sat fourth at three minutes after a day spent in van Aert’s pocket, hoovering leftover KOM crumbs. Urko Berrade fifth at 4:12, already on a Vuelta podium this race, still hunting the one that pays in yellow ink. Jan Hirt sixth at 4:18. The break did not dissolve on Alguacil. It stacked the top six and left the red jersey to arrive in 14th. That is what 8.3 kilometres at 9.8 percent does when the men who want the stage have already been at the front for 90 kilometres and the men who want the jersey have already spent 90 kilometres watching each other.
Official final climb: Collado del Alguacil, kilometre 186.8, 8.3 kilometres at 9.8 percent, 816 metres, finish 1,884 metres, hors categorie, Cima Alberto Fernández. The roadbook’s time sheet starts the puerto at kilometre 178.5. PCS printed won-how as 6.9 kilometres solo. EFE and Primicias printed the attack at 7 kilometres from the summit. Use both and do not pretend they are the same instrument. Landa dropped Johannessen on the steep kilometres and rode the rest of a new mountain alone. Cadena SER: the fans on the verge could not believe it. He could not hold the tears. A 36-year-old who spent a decade being told he was the next Spanish Grand Tour winner just took the queen stage of the one he is not going to win. The photograph is still a photograph. The children are why he did not sit up.
Four names. No domestiques. No makeup.
La Vanguardia: after Carapaz's Purche attack, Scotson and Bisiaux last seconds. Gall closes a metre from the summit. Then Mas, Roglic, Gall, Carapaz, face to face, 90 kilometres with nobody to hide behind.
He goes alone on the second Purche.
La Vanguardia: Landa arrives alone at the second Purche and catches the four Uno-X pulling at the front. The last chance has decided it is not waiting for the bunch.
El Duque. Landa first.
Official KOM: Landa 10 points and 6 seconds, Debruyne 6 and 4, Johannessen 4 and 2. The photograph is now three names. The rest of the break is racing for fourth.
He drops Johannessen. The mountain is his.
PCS: won how, 6.9 km solo. EFE / Primicias: attacked 7 km from the summit. 8.3 km at 9.8 percent, ramps the organisation and the Spanish desks print at 22. He does not look like a man who has had two years of shit. He looks like a man who will not go home surrendering.
4:58:01. 47 seconds. Tears.
Johannessen +47, Debruyne +1:27, Miquel +3:00. Mas +6:54. Gall 17 seconds faster than Mas, Roglic 38 slower. Red by 2:15. Combativity already Johannessen's before the line.
Mas is first overall in 70:56:58. Roglič is second at 2:15. Gall is third at 2:44. Carapaz is fourth at 6:54. Kuss is fifth at 8:45. The queen stage moved the numbers. It moved them the wrong way for everyone chasing the jersey.
Mas, La Vanguardia: for the first time in my life I feel like this. With the legs I had I have seen myself as the winner from the start of the stage. I have been counting down the kilometres.
- The goLanda first over El Duque. Debruyne and Johannessen for company. Then the wall that had never finished a bike race. He attacked inside the last 7 kilometres and turned the last new mountain of this Vuelta into a private road.
- The sheet4:58:01. Average 37.609 km/h. Johannessen +47. Debruyne +1:27. Miquel +3:00. Berrade +4:12. Kuss and Nordhagen +4:35. Gall +6:37. Mas +6:54. Roglic +7:32. Carapaz +8:31.
- The costCadena SER: he could not hold the tears. La Vanguardia: the fans on the verge could not believe it. A 36-year-old who spent a decade being told he was the next Spanish Grand Tour winner just took the queen stage of the one he is not going to win. The photograph is still a photograph.
A first-ever finish is a rumour until somebody puts a time on it. Landa put 4:58:01. Mas put 2:15. Granada can keep the parade.
Gall went with three kilometres. Mas was still there. Roglic was not.
The GC race was a different climb. Mundo Deportivo: Carapaz tried until the legs ran out. Then Gall went in the last three kilometres, hunting second, hunting the 1:24 he still owed Roglič from Jerez. Only Mas jumped on the wheel. Roglič could not. He climbed at his own tempo. He had almost two minutes and spent 38 seconds of them. Official stage times: Gall +6:37, Mas +6:54, Roglič +7:32, Carapaz +8:31. Seventeen seconds from Gall to Mas. Thirty-eight from Mas to Roglič. Cadena SER: Gall 29 seconds from second, and sorry he had not gone earlier. A 1:24 deficit this morning is a 29-second deficit tonight. That is a podium fight that just became a knife fight. It is not a red-jersey fight. The red jersey followed the attack and still put time into the four-time winner behind him.
Mas, La Vanguardia: for the first time in my life I feel like this. With the legs I had I have seen myself as the winner from the start of the stage. I have been counting down the kilometres. Thirteen days in red. He inherited the jersey when Tadej Pogačar crashed out on stage 8. He has not given it back. He also has not, until today, put this race in a drawer. 1:37 was the number he refused to call a lot after Jerez. Peñas Blancas did not touch it. Alguacil turned it into 2:15. A 31-year-old with three Vuelta second places is 2:15 from becoming the first Spaniard to win this race since Alberto Contador in 2014. La Vanguardia printed the 12-year wait. El Mundo printed the same sentence. The greatest Grand Tour a Spanish rider has taken since Contador’s last Vuelta is now a rolling formality if he stays upright tomorrow. If is doing a lot of work in that sentence. It is still less work than 8.3 kilometres at 9.8 percent, and he already did those.
Mas, La Vanguardia: I have won because of everything the team has done for me. Thirteen days in red. First Spanish winner since Contador in 2014 if he finishes tomorrow.
- The followMundo Deportivo: only Mas jumped on Gall's wheel in the last three kilometres. Roglic could not. He climbed at his own tempo. He had almost two minutes and spent 38 seconds of them. Cadena SER: Gall 29 seconds from second, and sorry he had not gone earlier.
- The inherited racePogacar crashed out on stage 8. Mas has been in red since. Three Vuelta second places. A 31-year-old who spent a generation being told he was not this. He counted the kilometres from the gun on the hardest day and treated 8.3 percent-average walls like a man who had already done the maths.
- TomorrowOfficial stage 21: 112 km, Carrefour Granada to Granada, type Flat. El Mundo: the organisation is studying a request from the teams to neutralize times because of the circuit. A parade is still a bike race until the jury says it is not. 2:15 is a title unless the road invents a crash.
You can inherit a jersey from a champion's ditch and still have to climb 8.3 kilometres at 9.8 percent to keep it. He did. The number is 2:15. The mountain does not get a refund.
Oscar Onley finished 19th at 10:19, fifth this morning, sixth tonight at 9:28, still in white. Jakob Omrzel 20th at 10:26, sixth to seventh at 10:38. The youth lead grew from 1:03 to 1:10. Léo Bisiaux remains the third young rider, 12th overall at 26:52. White is a locked door with a 1:10 chain. Clément Berthet +10:38 on the stage, eighth at 11:41. Cristian Rodríguez +10:32, ninth at 11:59. Harold Tejada +11:07, tenth at 14:40. Mattias Skjelmose +25:20, ninth this morning, 13th tonight at 27:32. Athletic had him fighting illness to keep a top ten into Montreal. 8.3 kilometres at 9.8 percent does not refund a fever. Guillaume Martin jumped to 11th at 22:03. The top ten that left Peñas Blancas is not the top ten that will ride Granada. Red is. Green is. Polka is, if Buitrago rolls. White is.
Johannessen took the combativity prize. He also took 8 seconds at the line and 2 on El Duque and spent the last new mountain of this Vuelta as the last man Landa had to drop. Debruyne, 24, third on a queen stage, 18 bonus seconds across Duque and the finish. Miquel fourth after a day spent in the break with van Aert. Berrade fifth, already on a Vuelta podium this race, still hunting the photograph. Jan Hirt sixth at 4:18. The break did not just take a picture. It took the top six. The GC men started arriving in 13th. That is what 4,849 metres does to a three-week body. Decathlon CMA CGM keep the teams lead in 213:40:00. The factory team that lost Riccitello this morning still owns the only collective sheet that pays.
A Visma rider who tried to go with Carapaz yesterday and paid 30 seconds just took fifth on the queen stage. The jersey fight ended. The top ten did not freeze.
- The gainersKuss and Nordhagen +4:35. Hirt sixth on the day, 15th overall. Berrade fifth on the day. Johannessen combative, 26th overall, 14 bonus seconds. The break took more than a photograph. It took a rung on the only sheet that still prints names into October.
- The payersOnley +10:19, fifth to sixth, white by 1:10. Omrzel +10:26. Carapaz +8:31, still fourth, now 6:54 down. Skjelmose +25:20, ninth to 13th at 27:32. A sick rider who had been fighting to keep a top ten into Montreal just got billed by 8.3 kilometres at 9.8 percent.
- The jerseysVan Aert 20 points at Guejar Sierra and 22 KOM across Blancares and both Purches. Green 326. Brennan 239. Buitrago scored nothing and still leads polka 78-62. Dunbar, yesterday's winner, did not finish. Riccitello and Hamilton crashed out early. The queen stage takes what it wants.
Red is a locked door. Fifth is a door Kuss just kicked. White is 1:10 and still Onley's. Polka is a Colombian who did not need another summit to keep it.
What Sunday cannot refund
Stage 21 is 112 kilometres from Carrefour Granada to Granada, official type Flat. El Mundo printed 99.4 kilometres and four circuits past the Alhambra with ramps of 7.5 percent over two kilometres, and said the organisation is studying a request from the teams to neutralize times because of the danger of the circuit. CFP uses the roadbook for the distance and the type. A parade is still a bike race until the jury says it is not. 2:15 is a title unless the road invents a crash. If you want the pictures, the how-to-watch guide still applies. The bodies will be racing the same kilometres through air that has not cooled.
Mas counted the kilometres from the gun. Roglic spent 38 seconds of a cushion that was supposed to be an argument. Gall took 17 and not the step. The last mountain of this Vuelta has already happened.
- The number1:37 was the figure Mas refused to call a lot after Jerez. Penas Blancas did not touch it. Alguacil turned it into 2:15. A four-time Vuelta winner is 2:15 from a fifth and 29 seconds from losing second. That is not a raid. That is arithmetic.
- The circuitEl Mundo: the organisation is studying a request from the teams to neutralize times because of the danger of the Granada circuit. A flat stage with Alhambra ramps is still a bike race. It is not 8.3 kilometres at 9.8 percent. The bodies that survived today will still have to steer tomorrow.
- SpainLanda took the queen stage. Mas took the three weeks. First Spanish Vuelta winner since Contador in 2014 if he rolls the Alhambra. A generation that spent a decade being told it was Pogacar's and Vingegaard's just put both photographs on a Granada mountain that had never been used. The parade still has to be ridden.
You can survive 8.3 kilometres at 9.8 percent and still have to ride 112 kilometres through a city that wants a picture. 2:15 is a title. It is not a finished race until the flag drops in Granada.
Landa got the day two wrecked years did not think they would see. Johannessen got second and the combativity jersey and 47 seconds of proof that the last new mountain was a race. Debruyne got a queen-stage podium at 24. Mas got 2:15 and a first Spanish Vuelta since 2014 if he stays upright. Roglič got 38 more seconds in the red column and 29 seconds of second place. Gall got 17 seconds and not the step. Kuss got fifth. Onley got seven more seconds of white. Van Aert got 20 points and 22 mountains points and a green jersey that was already paid for. Buitrago got a 16-point lead and another summit with no photograph. Dunbar got a DNF the morning after the longest stage of the race. Vuelta a Espana 2026 stage 20 will be remembered as the afternoon a 36-year-old told a Spanish mountain he would not go home surrendering, and a 31-year-old counted the kilometres from the gun and put a four-time winner 2:15 back. The queen stage went to a rider who had two years of s**t. The red jersey went back to the bus with Granada in the window. Tomorrow is 112 kilometres and official type Flat. What is a last chance worth when you have already spent two years unable to find the photograph, and what is 2:15 worth when the hardest day is behind you and the city still has to be ridden?
