UCI Rainbows in Montreal, Canada

The 2026 World Championships Montreal men’s road race is on 27 September. Tadej Pogačar will not start it. Jonas Vingegaard will not start it. The two men who defined this season both left it in a sling, and the rainbow they would have argued over is sitting on a Canadian mountain waiting for whoever can still stand up after 273.7 kilometres. That is not a feel-good vacancy. That is a wage-bill vacuum. A world title is a winter of appearance fees, a year of identity, and a jersey that tells every contract negotiation who is still the sport. Mount Royal does not care who is missing. It will still charge 3,803 metres of climbing for the right to wear it.

If the two superstars are in slings, is this an open world championship — or just a longer version of a race we already watched?

00 · The mountainThe 2026 World Championships Montreal course does not do bunch sprints.

Two weeks ago the same roads ran a dress rehearsal. Isaac del Toro beat Paul Seixas in a two-up sprint at the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal. Remco Evenepoel, who had won Québec 48 hours earlier, finished fifth and called it a bad day he would rather have now than on the 27th. The World Championships are 60 kilometres longer than that race. Less punch. More fatigue. That sentence is the whole preview if you are willing to hear it.

The men leave Quartier DIX30 in Brossard at 09:00. They ride the South Shore through Carignan, Chambly, Mont-Saint-Hilaire, Richelieu, Saint-Jean-Baptiste, Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu and Saint-Mathias-sur-Richelieu, then they cross the Samuel-De Champlain Bridge for the first time as a sporting event and drop onto the circuit that has been eating WorldTour riders since 2010. Twelve laps. 13.4 kilometres each. 269 metres of climbing a lap. Finish on Avenue du Parc, the uphill drag every Grand Prix of Montréal already taught you to fear. The UCI calls the whole thing 273.7 kilometres and 3,803 metres. That is not a sprinter’s worlds. It is not a pure climber’s worlds either. It is a one-day Grand Tour that pretends to be a circuit race.

The circuit has three punches. Voie Camillien-Houde is the long one: 2.3 kilometres at 6.2 percent, the climb Belgian coach Serge Pauwels says sits right on the edge where a wheel stops protecting you. Chemin de la Polytechnique is the steep one, with pitches over 11 percent. Avenue du Parc is the lie: a false flat to the line after a 90-degree corner with 600 metres to go. Pauwels told Het Nieuwsblad there will not be a fifteen-man sprint. Believe him. Sixteen laps of this circuit last Sunday already reduced the Grand Prix to two men. Worlds asks for twelve more after a hundred-kilometre commute.

Climb figures from the UCI 200-days course briefing and the Montréal 2026 technical material. Per-lap climbing 269 m. Eddy Merckx won here in 1974, the first Worlds held outside Europe. The mountain has not gotten shorter.

Canada last hosted in Hamilton in 2003. North America last hosted in Richmond in 2015. Montréal 2026 is the fifth road worlds on this continent and the first in eleven years. Admission on the roadside is free. The grandstands on the finishing straight for the men’s race are already sold out. Half a million people are expected to stand on a mountain and watch a rainbow get decided without the two names that sold the tickets. That is the product. The riders still have to pay for it with their legs.

01 · The vacancyTwo collarbones. One empty rainbow. The season wrote this start list in hospitals.

Pogačar crashed on Vuelta stage 8, hit a loose rock, and left Spain with a displaced left collarbone, a stable C7 fracture, a concussion and a season that ended in a Spanish hospital. UAE said he will not race again in 2026. The two-time defending world champion — Kigali 2025, Zürich 2024 — is not coming to defend anything. Vingegaard crashed on Tour stage 15, about 20 kilometres from Solaison, fractured a collarbone, had surgery, and Visma shut the year down on 17 August. No Vuelta. No Worlds. No Europeans. The Giro champion and the five-time Tour champion are both in recovery. Montreal inherited their absence the way Mas inherited red: without asking for it, and with the whole sport staring.

Elite men’s road race roll. Pogačar’s two-year hold ends without a defence. Evenepoel and van der Poel are the living former champions on the start list.

This is what an open world championship actually looks like. Not a lottery. A census of who built a September for a race the two best riders of the decade can no longer contest. Evenepoel skipped the Vuelta and went to altitude. Del Toro and Seixas used the Canadian WorldTour weekend as a final exam on the circuit. Van Aert rode three weeks in Spain for green and two stages and now has fourteen days to turn a Grand Tour into a one-day peak. Mathieu van der Poel skipped Québec and Montréal entirely and is using the Tour of Luxembourg as his last hit. Different bets. Same mountain.

02 · The dress rehearsalQuébec was Evenepoel. Montréal was the kids. Worlds is longer than both.

Friday 11 September, Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec, 206 kilometres, 20 laps of 10.3. Evenepoel attacked with more than 25 kilometres still to race — L’Équipe had it at 28 — on a section of road where the favourites were not supposed to be thinking yet. He rode Giulio Ciccone and Anthon Charmig off the front, dropped Charmig on the last Côte de la Montagne, and beat Ciccone in a two-up sprint. First Quebec win. Eleventh victory of 2026. Seventy-eighth as a professional. Fastest edition on record at 44.087 km/h. Seixas finished in the first chase group, 57 seconds down, after nearly going down in the finale. Juan Ayuso did go down. Del Toro never made the move. Evenepoel had been away from racing since Clásica San Sebastián. He did not look rusty. He looked like a man who had used the Vuelta window as a laboratory and then opened it on the Plains of Abraham.

Sunday 13 September, Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal, 214.4 kilometres, 16 laps of the Worlds circuit, 4,304 metres of climbing. Different race. Seixas put the winning move in on the last Camillien-Houde with about 10 kilometres to go. Del Toro went with him. Evenepoel could not. The two of them rode to the line. Del Toro launched at 250 metres and won by lengths. Youngest winner in the race’s history. Twelfth win of his season. UAE’s fifth straight Montreal. Brandon McNulty, last year’s winner, took third at 27 seconds. Quinn Simmons fourth at 30. Evenepoel fifth at 35, after bridging to an earlier group and then failing to answer Seixas on the last climb. Tom Pidcock sixth. Ciccone seventh. The circuit had already told you who can live on it in September.

Official results. Montreal average 41.064 km/h. Seixas launched the winning move on the last Camillien-Houde. Evenepoel: “It will be a very different race with a lot more fatigue. Less explosive and more about endurance.”

Evenepoel saw the headline coming. He told Sporza they were probably going to make him the worst rider in the world. Then he said the useful part. If Sunday was a bad day, it was not that bad, and it is better to have a bad day now than in two weeks. He also said he does not love the rain. Montreal in late September can give him that whether he loves it or not. The quote that matters is the distance. Worlds is 60 kilometres longer. The Grand Prix is a punch fight. The championship is a hunger fight. He is betting the extra hour is his country.

03 · The extra 60The Grand Prix had more climbing. The championship has more time to die.

Do the arithmetic before the romance. The Grand Prix of Montreal ran 16 laps and 4,304 metres. Worlds runs 12 laps after a long, relatively flat approach and 3,803 metres. The dress rehearsal was punchier. The championship is longer. That is the trap for anyone who watched del Toro and Seixas ride away on the last lap and decided the rainbow is already theirs. Sixteen hard laps select the explosive. Twelve hard laps after 110 kilometres of South Shore select the man who still has a match when the others are counting them. Evenepoel named that difference out loud. He is not guessing. He is describing the race he trained for when everyone else was in Spain.

60 EXTRA KILOMETRES.The Grand Prix told you who can punch on Camillien-Houde. The championship asks who still can after Brossard.

04 · EvenepoelHe built a September for a race nobody else was allowed to skip.

Remco Evenepoel is the favourite because the calendar made him one and then the results refused to argue. Second at the Tour, 6:26 behind Pogačar, first Tour podium, stage win at Solaison, time trial win at Thonon. Then he skipped the Vuelta. Then he won San Sebastián. Then he went to altitude. Then he won Quebec. Then he finished fifth on the Worlds circuit on tired legs in the rain and told the cameras not to panic. That is not a vibes campaign. That is a man who treated September like a contract and then invoiced Canada for the deposit.

He already owns this jersey. Wollongong 2022. He was second in Kigali last year, which means he knows exactly what it costs to ride for silver behind Pogačar and what it is worth to ride for gold without him. He is also chasing a double no elite man has landed at the same Worlds: the time trial on 20 September, 39.2 kilometres through Old Montreal and the Gilles Villeneuve circuit, and the road race seven days later. He asked the question himself. How often has a rider won both at the same World Championship? Never. That was the goal last year. It is the goal again. A fourth straight time-trial rainbow is the opening act. The road race is the reason he did not start in Monaco.

Form from official results and Evenepoel’s own comments after Montreal. Olympic road and TT gold, Paris 2024, sits behind the Worlds double he still does not have.

Belgium brought eight men to make that bet hold. Evenepoel. Wout van Aert. Tiesj Benoot, Quinten Hermans, Thibau Nys, Alec Segaert, Maxim Van Gils, Gianni Vermeersch. Pauwels said each leader gets a bodyguard: Hermans with Van Aert, Vermeersch with Evenepoel. That is not a national team. That is a trade team in different jerseys. Mexico cannot do this. France can try. The Netherlands will try around van der Poel. Italy will try around Ciccone. None of them brought two riders who can win it and six who can spend themselves before the last hour. That is the Belgian advantage, and it is the reason Evenepoel is first on this page even after a fifth place on the circuit.

05 · Del Toro vs SeixasThe circuit already crowned them. The championship still has to.

Isaac del Toro is 22. He won Tirreno–Adriatico. He won the UAE Tour. He finished third at the Tour de France on debut, in white, after Pogačar sat up and gave him stage 2 in Barcelona. He just became the youngest man to win the Grand Prix of Montreal, on the Worlds circuit, against the other kid who is supposed to inherit this sport. Twelve wins in a season is not a cameo. It is a rider who has already been paid as a future and is now collecting in the present. UAE have owned Montreal for five years. The rainbow is the first thing they cannot buy with a trade-team lead-out, because on 27 September del Toro races for Mexico. The numbers around him shrink. The expectation does not.

Paul Seixas is 19. He finished fourth at the Tour, 11:56 down, on a Grand Tour debut that made French cycling feel young again. Last Sunday he was the one who actually broke the race. The acceleration on Camillien-Houde was his. Del Toro had to go get him. The sprint was not. That is the entire Seixas problem in one lap: he can open a world championship, and he has not yet proved he can close one against a faster finisher. France will bring a team. That matters more for him than it does for del Toro. A 19-year-old who can make the last selection on this circuit is not a prospect. He is a podium until someone takes it off him.

They already did this. Once. Shorter.▪ CFP

GP Montreal, 13 September 2026: del Toro 5:13:16, Seixas same time. Radio-Canada: Seixas attacked in the last metres of Camillien-Houde. The Athletic: del Toro from 250 metres.

The national-jersey problem is not a footnote. Trade teams win Canadian WorldTour races because they can put McNulty on the podium behind del Toro and call it a plan. Worlds strips that luxury. Del Toro will have to sit in a Belgian-made race and still have the snap Seixas showed on the last climb. If he does, he is the most obvious man to beat Evenepoel. If he does not, he is third on a Tour podium and first in a dress rehearsal, and the rainbow goes back to Europe. That is the cost of being the best rider from a country that does not get eight start slots.

06 · Belgium’s eightTwo leaders. Six spenders. The only team that can make the race and still win it.

Pauwels picked a team that can police a long race and still have a sprinter-climber and a diesel left for the last hour. Van Aert is the second leader, and he is not a sentimental pick. He won Paris–Roubaix this spring, the only road beating Pogačar took all year. He missed the Tour with an elbow. He went to the Vuelta and took two stages, the green jersey on 326 points, the combativity prize, and a body that finished in one piece two years after the 2024 crash he called one of the biggest disappointments of his career. Benoot watched him climb in Spain and said a good Wout has already finished second here behind Pogačar. That 2022 Grand Prix still lives in Belgian memory. The question is whether fourteen days after Granada is enough time to turn a three-week raid into a 273-kilometre peak. Green jerseys do not always travel. Sometimes they stay in Spain with the hotel pillows.

The rest of the grid is not empty. Van der Poel is the 2023 world champion. He won stage 21 in Paris. He skipped the Canadian races and put Luxembourg on the calendar for 16 September. Koos Moerenhout said you ride to win when Mathieu is the leader. You also ride a course that Pauwels thinks asks lighter men to attack and classics men to survive. Van der Poel has survived worse. He has not been seen on Camillien-Houde this month. Pidcock was fourth in Quebec and sixth in Montreal. Simmons was fifth and fourth. Ciccone was second and seventh. Jorgenson was eighth in Quebec. Roglič finished second at the Vuelta on 13 September and now has to turn a three-week war into a one-day jump with no Pogačar in the Slovenian car. Mas just became Vuelta champion. Spain will want a photograph. The mountain does not owe Spain a rainbow for Granada.

07 · The callFirst, Evenepoel. Second, del Toro. Third, Seixas.

Put the evidence on the table and stop pretending the vacancy made this a raffle. Evenepoel has the best team, the most specific build, a win on Canadian soil eight days ago, and a fifth place on the circuit he can explain with fatigue the championship will only increase. Del Toro has the circuit win, the Tour podium, and the problem of racing for Mexico when Belgium is trying to burn matches. Seixas has the attack that actually created Sunday and a French team that can at least try to isolate Evenepoel before the last hour. That is 1, 2, 3. It is not a hedge. It is a ranking of who the last 60 kilometres are for.

CFP podium · men elite road race, 27 Sep▪ CFP
1EvenepoelBelgium. The extra 60 km. Eight teammates. Quebec in the pocket. A bad day that was still fifth. The hunger race is his race.

3SeixasFrance. Nineteen. The acceleration on Camillien-Houde. Needs a team, then a different sprint. The attack, not yet the close.

Editorial ranking based on the Canadian WorldTour weekend, Tour form, national-team size and the extra 60 km. Van Aert is the first name who can scramble all three if the last group is small and the finish is a drag race. This is a prediction, not a result.

Van Aert is the honest asterisk. If the last selection is three or four and the line is the Parc false flat, he can still win a rainbow he has finished second for twice. That is not this desk’s base case, because this course, on this distance, after this Vuelta, asks him to survive Camillien-Houde twelve times and still have a sprint. Pauwels thinks the lighter men will try to go. Del Toro and Seixas already did. Evenepoel already said the longer race is less explosive. The base case is that Belgium makes it hard, Evenepoel lives the last climb, and the kids who won the dress rehearsal fill the other two steps because they are the ones who can still be there when the hour gets ugly.

08 · How Sunday actually happensBrossard is a commute. The race starts when the laps start eating people.

The opening loop is for the break and for the cameras on the Champlain Bridge. It is not for the rainbow. The race becomes a world championship when the peloton hits lap traffic and Belgium decides whether to let a move of the wrong size go. If Evenepoel’s group still has Vermeersch and Van Gils with three laps left, the kids have to attack from a disadvantaged position, which is exactly how Seixas already tried. If Belgium loses the thread the way they did on the last Camillien-Houde last Sunday, del Toro does not need a team. He needs one gap and one sprint. That is the fork. Everything else is decoration.

  1. Brossard to the bridgeLong, relatively flat. Break goes. Belgium and France watch, they do not chase yet.
  2. Laps 1 to 6Camillien-Houde starts taking the sprinters. Polytechnique starts taking the curious.
  3. Laps 7 to 10The hour of money. Van Gils, Benoot, Nys, a French engine. Groups of 20 become groups of 8.
  4. Last two lapsSeixas or del Toro punches. Evenepoel has to answer or ride the extra 60 km as a chase.
  5. Last Camillien-HoudeThe GP already showed the move. Worlds adds an hour of fatigue on top of it.
  6. Avenue du ParcNo fifteen-man sprint. Two, three, maybe five. False flat. Rainbow.
Schematic race script based on the UCI course, Pauwels’ circuit comments, and the 13 September Grand Prix. Not a guarantee. A map of where the race can break.

The time trial on 20 September is the other half of Evenepoel’s week and it is not this article’s bet. It is context. If he wins the 39.2 kilometres, the road race becomes a hunt for a double nobody has. If he does not, the road race becomes the only rainbow left in the suitcase. Either way he starts Sunday as the man the race has to be ridden against. Del Toro starts as the man who already won on the circuit. Seixas starts as the man who made that winning move. Van Aert starts as the man who can still ruin a tidy preview because he has been ruining tidy previews since the velodrome in Roubaix.

Montreal last gave this jersey to Merckx in 1974. The 2026 World Championships Montreal is the same mountain in newer tarmac. The champion is in a sling. The Giro winner is in a sling. The rest of them get a free world championship the way Mas got a free Vuelta: free only in the sense that the favourite fell over. You still have to finish the job on Avenue du Parc with 3,803 metres in your legs and a national jersey that does not come with UAE’s lead-out. That is the cost. That is the race.

When the rainbow comes back down Avenue du Parc, will it be on the man who trained for the extra hour — or on the kid who already won the shorter version?
